Vyvanse

Lisdexamfetamine, sold as Vyvanse, is a drug used as part of a treatment program to control symptoms of attentiondeficit hyperactive disorder.  Lisdexamfetamine is a psychostimulat prodrug, part of the central nervous system stimulant class.  Vyvanse is a longer lasting version of dextroamphetamine, and has less abuse potential than Adderall or Concerta.  Lisdexamfetamine is currently being researched as a possible treatment for major depressive disorder and schizizophrenia. 

 

History:

Vyvanse was developed by New River Pharmaceuticals, who were bought by Shire Pharmaceuticals shortly before lisdexamphetamine began being marketed.  The drug was approved by the FDA for the treatment of attention deficit hyperactive disorder. 

Usage:

Vyvanse comes as a capsule, to be taken orally.  You can either swallow the pill whole or dissolve it in a glass of water.  Vyvanse should be taken once a day in the morning or afternoon, with or without food.  Vyvanse should be taken around the same time every day, and may cause difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep. 

Minor Side Effects:

Taken properly, Vyvanse may cause some or all of the following side effects:

-Difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep

-Sleepiness

-Uncontrollable shaking

-Dizziness

-Jitters

-Headache

-Dry mouth

-Stomach pain

-Diarrhea

-Nausea

-Vomiting

-Loss of appetite

-Weight loss

-Fever

-Sweating

-Rashes

Serious Side Effects:

Even proper dosage of Vyvanse has the potential to cause some of the following serious side effects:

-Fast or pounding heartbeat

-Chest pain

-Shortness of breath

-Fainting

-Slow or difficult speech

-Weakness of arms or legs

-Seizures

-Hallucinating

-Believing things that aren’t true

-Feeling unusually suspicious of others

-Aggression

-Irritability

-Mood swings

-Frenzied, abnormally excited mood

-Tics

-Hives

-Swelling of the eyes, face, tongue, lips or mouth

-Blurred vision

*Lisdexamfetamine may cause sudden death in children and teenagers, especially those with heart conditions.
